IBD commenced life in Brazil as Instituto Biodinâmico for Rural Development in the late 1980s. IBD prepared it first own organic standards in 1988 and started inspection and certification in 1990. IBD became IFOAM Accredited in 1995 and in 1999 ISO 65/CEE 2092/91 accreditet, the first certification body to do so for both protocols in South America. In 2002 IBD got also NOP Accredited by the USDA and continues as a leading influence in the organic scene in Brazil and Latin America in general.

With it´s headquarters in Botucatu, 2,5 hours drive from Sao Paulo, IBD have championed the promotion of biodynamic and organic agriculture in Brazil and offer certification to both organic and biodynamic labels throughout the whole of Brazil and Latin America.

The main purpose of IBD is to participate in the development of organic, biodynamic and socially correct agriculture, processing, trading and its markets, through certification. Today the IBD staff is 25 in its head office and 30 inspectors.

Since 1999, the standard setting function of IBD has been delegated to a separate body Associação Biodinâmica - ABD, although IBD personnel retain some input in it´s content. A General Assembly elects a Board of Directors and a Fiscal Committee. The Board is formed by members representing a balance of interests in the Association, which are: research, production, processing & handling, trade, consumers and certification.

Today IBD certifies 650 operations including grower groups, indigenous communities and familiar agriculture with together 3.300 small farmers, individual farms, industries and traders in three continents (America, Asia and Europe). The certified area under organig management and sustainable wild crop harvesting is 1.84 milion hectares.

The IBD Programme includes standards for organic and/or biodynamic crop production, livestock, processing and handling, wild products, input manufacturing, grower groups, cosmetics, textiles and restaurants.

In 2007 IBD published the 4th edition of its EcoSocial standards and certification programme, becoming increasingly popular due to recent demand in “Fair Trade” Products.
