Heated Demand Makes Organic Production Soar

The clamor of Brazilians for a healthier and pesticide-free diet has had an effect on the country’s crops. In less than a decade, the number of registered organic producers in Brazil has doubled, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa). In 2012 there were 5.9 registered producers. In March this year the number jumped to over 17,700. Also increased the number of units of organic production. In 2010, there were 5.4 thousand registered units. Today, there are more than 22 thousand. Despite the exponential growth of registrations, it is estimated that the universe of organic producers is much larger than that of official statistics. Before the decree regulating the sector came into force in 2007, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) identified that 90,000 producers already declared themselves organic.
